Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 15/16 inch (2.38 cm) in height consisting of a shield blazoned:  Gules, on and in front of a rock issuant Argent an oak tree Vert.

Symbolism
The shield is red (Gules), with the rock in white (Argent), the colors of the Engineer Corps.  The rock is taken from the arms of St. Mihiel and the tree is emblematic of the Meuse-Argonne.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 23d Engineer Regiment on 5 April 1934.  It was redesignated for the 23d Engineer Battalion (Armored) on 11 July 1941.  It was redesignated for the 23d Armored Engineer Battalion on 23 December 1949.  The insignia was redesignated for the 23d Engineer Battalion on 18 August 1958.
